Easy to Make Asian Sloppy Joes – Love This Recipe!

I have to start off by saying I cannot take 100% credit for this Asian Sloppy Joes recipe.  My friend from the Philippines was here making Filipino Spaghetti and used banana ketchup in it.  Later he made ground beef with regular ketchup and soy sauce.  The neat thing is that combining them with ginger and some other ingredients created a unique flavor like a bbq sauce.  That’s when it hit me, lets spice it up a bit.

By modifying the ingredients a little and sticking with a base, I made a mix that tastes just like sloppy joes.  Because the original came from my friend from the Philippines and because we’re using mostly Asian ingredients, I’m calling it Asian Sloppy Joes.  My friend also approved and loves the name.  Here’s how to make it.

You will need:

  • 1lb of ground beef
  • 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of ketchup
  • 4 – 6 cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 red onion
  • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of sriracha
  • 2 – 4 tablespoons of oyster sauce
  • Bread or hamburger buns

ingredients for homemade sloppy joes

Start by chopping your onions so you have big chunks.  Next, smash your garlic and then give it a rough chop as well.  Smashing the garlic cloves before using them brings out a lot more flavor.

Now start browning your ground beef.  You can leave any of the fat that comes off…it just adds to the flavor.  Once you beef is browned, start adding in the ingredients.  I took a picture of them from above so you can see about what I add to each.  Later on I added a bit more sriracha than you see and an extra splash of soy sauce.  You can season it to taste but do not add salt.  The soy sauce has enough to flavor it.

Once it’s done cooking you can let it cool a bit and then serve it.

This recipe is really easy and very quick to make.  It’s kind of shocking but you can actually make sloppy joes by combining ketchup with these traditional Asian ingredients.  You can always modify as well to bring out other flavors and add more sriracha to make it more spicy.  Let me know how it works for you by leaving a comment below.
