A Tale of Two Reds – Very Different Wine Experiences

I’m still on my month of new wines and will probably stick with it through March.  The two wines that I have been drinking this week and last are the I Balzini White Label Super Tuscan 2012 and Long Meadow Ranch 2014 Rutherford Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.  Below you’ll find my review and if they’re worth buying, at what price and what/how to pair them.

I Balzini White Label Super Tuscan 2012

The I Balzini White Label Super Tuscan 2012 is one that I shared with my nextdoor neighbor.  We really enjoyed this wine.  We drank it pre-dinner (I made korean bbq shortribs which would have paired perfectly with this) which was a mistake.  This wine was delicious by itself, but it really needs food to make it more enjoyable.

It was fairly dry but light on your tounge.  It has a really mild bite which she liked and we both really enjoyed the gritty and earthy taste.  It would have matched perfectly with brie and pepperoni (meat and cheese trays) as well as a pot roast, short rib or even sliders.  It was a random purchase I made and I’m really happy I did.  I would absolutely buy this wine again.  Here’s a shot of the label so you can find the same one.  Then I went onto the next wine, which unfortunately did not provide the same experience.

Long Meadow Ranch 2014 Rutherford Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

It’s very rare that I hate a cabarnet from this region of Napa.  This is one of those rare occasions.  The Long Meadow Ranch 2014 Rutherford Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve tasted like bile and made my stomach turn.  I tried everything from letting it sit and decanting it to pairing it with the peppercorn crusted steaks I made the other week.   There was nothing I could do to make this an enjoyable wine.

Maybe I got a bad bottle or maybe it’s just a bad year, but unfortunately I don’t have anything good that I can say about this except that they have a gorgeous bottle and the colors and aroma from the wine were beautiful.  Not every wine is for every person so I do encourage you to try it.  Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean that you won’t.  If it turns out I did get a bad bottle, it literally made me sick, then it could actually be delicious.  If you’ve had the Long Meadow Ranch 2014 Rutherford Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, let me know by leaving a comment below with your experience.

  1. After reading this review I was hesitant to purchase. I bought a bottle anyway it tasted fantastic. One of the best cabs I’ve had in a long time. Maybe your bottle was corked?

      Hi Nancy,

There’s a very good chance of it. They have an amazing reputation from what I could see. I almost bought their red blend tonight oddly enough, but because of my previous experience I didn’t. Knowing that you enjoyed will probably get me to change my mind and I’ll order them again. Just not yet since there are other wines I want to try first.

Thank you for the alternative review of it!

      Adam
