Nugan Estates Petit Sirah Review

The other day I was making a korean bbq shortrib for a friend and he asked what wine to bring.  I told him either a Petit Sirah or an old world vine cab.  I thought he would do something like a Staggs Leap Winery Petit Sirah or Bogle, but instead he came with one I hadn’t heard of.  It is the Nugan Estate bottle and it was really interesting.

Nugan Estate Petit Sirah

I’ve never really gone for Australian wines before because I hadn’t found one I liked.  I’ve tried a ton of varietals including their famous Shiraz but never really liked them.  When my friend showed up with this one I was a bit tempted to open something else, but I decided to give it a shot and not be rude.  Before I go into the wine, If you’re wondering why it says Durif on it, it is a varietal made from a Petit Sirah grape.

This wine has a really tangy taste when you start to drink it.  I didn’t like it at first, but once I let it breath for a while it calmed down and tasted amazing.  It was full, had some really good fruits in it and gave enough bite to make me happy but not be undrinkable.  It is perfect to pair with burgers, meatloaf, dark asian sauces, anything with ketchup or bbq sauce or thick, heavy and rich red sauces.

You could easily drink this without food if you want something to watch tv with, but be ready for it to start out strong and then get easier.  Besides the weird taste at first, I really enjoyed this wine and I would definitely buy it again.  It should probably be in the $25 to $50 range for the bottle, but I don’t know how much it costs or what it actually goes for since I didn’t buy it.  If you’re looking for an Australian Petit Sirah and want a go to bottle, the Nugan Durif could be a very good option for you.

Here’s a picture of the back label as well if you want to make sure you have the same one that we were drinking.
